What Is Wire Forming?
Wire forming is the process of taking a length of unshaped wire from a blank length or a spooled coil and applying exterior force to manipulate the wire into a predetermined shape that has been designed to complete a specific job. A wire form is the finished product of the process; the shaped wire part that is ready to be used. In the past, wire forming was done using human force and rudimentary tools. Now, custom wire forming is done with state-of-the-art equipment.
As technology has advanced, the possibilities and applications of wire forming have grown exponentially. The ability to customize wire forms has never been more granular, and no matter your project needs, wire forming manufacturers are ready to meet them. J.I.M.S. Incorporated uses Fourslide, Multislide and Bihler wire forming machines, which results in faster setup, better consistency, and reliable repeatability.
Wire Forming Materials
There are a wide variety of wire forming materials available, and which material you need largely depends on your project specs, budget, and the end-use of the component. Each type of metal has different properties, benefits, and caveats, and it's important to compare and contrast options to select the best material for your parts.
We use many types of wire, including but not limited to:
- Aluminum. This material is flexible, light, and easy to work with. Aluminum is typically inexpensive and naturally resists corrosion.
- Bronze. Bronze is strong, resistant to corrosion, affordable, and an excellent electrical conductor.
- Brass. This material is a zinc and copper alloy with anti-corrosive properties similar to bronze and is a popular choice for applications that need good thermal conductivity.
- Cold-Rolled Steel. Cold-rolled steel is harder and stronger than aluminum or copper wire and has a super-smooth finish. A good choice for projects that require welding.
- Carbon Steel. This material is both strong and affordable, making it an excellent option for parts that need to stay rigid. Unfortunately, carbon steel is also rust-prone less malleable than other materials.
- Copper. Copper is frequently used for projects that require electrical conductivity. It's both strong and flexible and maintains integrity in extreme temperatures.
- Steel. The most common material used.
- Stainless Steel. This common material is frequently used for parts that need to be resistant to heat, moisture, and oxidation.
- Nickel. Nickel is highly resistant to corrosion and is another excellent option for components that need to function consistently in both extreme low and high temps.
- Titanium. This material is a superior choice for many parts, due to its exceptional strength, durability, and elasticity. Titanium is less commonly used than other materials, however, due to its higher cost.
